One thing that many people do not know is that the way traffic citations in the State of Georgia are handled is different from other states.

In Georgia any moving violation is a criminal misdemeanor. This means that the punishment that a judge can give you for a traffic citation or ticket can result in either 12 months in jail AND/OR a fine of up to $1000.00. This is different from other states where a speeding citation means you can either pay a fine or take a defensive driving class and the citation would be dismissed.

Moving violations in Georgia range from Hit and Run, Failure to Report an Accident, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Driving Under the Influence (DUI), Racing, Speeding (including Super Speeder), Failing to Obey order of officer directing controlling or regulating traffic, Failure to Yield Right of Way, Failure to Yield to emergency Vehicle, Failure to Yield to a train, Failure to stop for a school bus, Improper Lane Change, Failure to Stop for a Stop Sign, Driving on Suspended License, Driving on Expired Registration, Driving on Suspended Registration, Driving without Insurance.

I RECEIVED A TRAFFIC CITATION WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT?

There are several options when it is time to deal with that traffic ticket. For some tickets, one option is to pay the citation before the court date that the officer gave you. Depending on the type of ticket the officer gave you there will be a fine associated with the citation as well as points for your drivers license.

Another way is to enter a plea of Nolo Contendere or No contest. A plea of Nolo works the same as a guilty plea BUT will prevent points from going on your license. Unfortunately if you pay the fine and enter a plea to the charge, it won't prevent a reaction from your insurance company and a plea of no contest does not have any affect on how the insurance company treats the “cost” for your vehicle insurance policy. Insurance companies can raise YOUR INSURANCE RATES if you violate the rules of the road.

Hiring an attorney to assist you can only increase your chances of avoiding not only points on your license but reactions from your insurance company and increases in your insurance premium.

Just because you have been charged with a traffic citation does not mean that you have to accept guilt, it means you need to hire a experienced criminal defense traffic attorney to mount a proper defense for your charges.
